Sustainable Business Practices in the Electricity Industry Awarded

OTTAWA, Ontario – June 14, 2013. Horizon Utilities Corporation, Brookfield Renewable Energy Group, and BC Hydro all received Sustainable ElectricityTM Awards last night from the Canadian Electricity Association (CEA) for their commitment to sustainable development.

“The awards recognize and celebrate organizations that are innovative in their approach to dealing with the impacts of their operations,” explains David Morrison, Chair of the CEA Board of Directors Committee on Sustainability, and President and CEO of Yukon Energy Corporation.

Winners were awarded for achievement in Environmental, Social and Economic award categories. CEA member utilities submitted projects for consideration for the various award categories in early 2013. Entries were evaluated by an independent Public Advisory Panel chaired by the Honourable Mike Harcourt, former Premier of British Columbia. “I am pleased and encouraged by the progressive sustainability practices of this year’s winners,” said Mr. Harcourt. “The variety and quality of the submissions is a reflection of the willingness of the industry to work on overcoming the barriers to innovation and sustainability.”

2013 Award Winners:

Environmental Commitment Award – Horizon Utilities Corporation

Social Responsibility Award – Brookfield Renewable Energy Group

“Currently, and in the coming years, the electricity industry is challenged with a need for major investment in electricity infrastructure maintenance and renewal in order to meet the needs of our modern economy,” said Jim Burpee, CEA’s President and CEO. “Projects like those undertaken by this year’s winners pave the way for continual improvement of environmental, social and economic outcomes in communities across the country.”
